Murfreesboro Offices Closed for MLK Day as Annual March and Blood Drive Return

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — In observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, all City of Murfreesboro offices and most city-operated facilities will be closed on Monday, January 19, 2026.

There will be no residential garbage collection on Monday. Monday’s routes will shift to Tuesday, January 20, with Tuesday’s pickup moving to Wednesday, Wednesday’s to Thursday, and Thursday’s collection moving to Friday.

Murfreesboro Transit, the city’s public transportation service, will not operate on the federal holiday.

Most Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Department facilities will also be closed. However, the Adams Tennis Complex will remain open during regular hours from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Patterson Park Community Center will be open only for scheduled MLK Day events. Old Fort Golf Course and Bloomfield Links will be open, weather permitting.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of the most influential leaders of the American civil rights movement.

The Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day March will take place on Monday, January 19, beginning at noon at Central Magnet School, located at 701 E. Main Street. Participants are invited to gather starting at 11:00 a.m. ahead of the noon departure. The march will proceed to Patterson Park Community Center, where it will conclude indoors with a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. memorial tribute.

In addition, a community blood drive will be held Monday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Patterson Park Community Center, 521 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The event is a partnership between the American Red Cross, the Rutherford County Alumni Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., and Patterson Park Community Center. Appointments to donate blood can be scheduled through RedCrossBlood.org.

City of Murfreesboro business offices will resume normal hours of operation on Tuesday, January 20.

Schools: Throughout Rutherford County, both Rutherford County Schools and Murfreesboro City Schools will also be closed on Monday, January 19, in observance of MLK Day.

County and Other Municipalities: In addition to Murfreesboro, Smyrna and La Vergne government offices being closed, so will Rutherford County government offices on Monday, January 19, 2026. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Day federal holiday falls on the third Monday of January each year.
