MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS News) - Murfreesboro is gearing up for another bitterly cold day, and city leaders are taking no chances. Most City facilities — including City Hall — will be closed on Monday, Jan. 26, 2026. Only operations essential to public safety will remain open, and those teams are already stretched across the city responding to icy roads, downed limbs, and powerline issues brought on by the prolonged freeze.
Public Safety and Public Works crews will continue operating through the weather, with Street Department teams working 12‑hour shifts to salt and plow as many routes as possible. While major roads are generally passable, officials warn that many secondary streets remain slick and hazardous, especially in shaded areas and neighborhoods where ice has refrozen overnight.
NO Murfreesboro Transit Monday
Murfreesboro Transit is also shutting down service on Monday. The decision, city officials say, is all about keeping riders and employees safe as temperatures stay well below freezing and road conditions remain unpredictable.
Indoor Murfreesboro Parks & Rec CLOSED Monday
Indoor recreational facilities operated by Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation will be closed Monday as well, joining the list of city services paused by the storm.
Monday Garbage Pickup (May Be Limited)
Solid Waste crews anticipate either no service or very limited collection on Monday. Residents are encouraged to place their trash containers at the street, and crews will collect as soon as conditions allow. For those wanting real‑time updates, the city offers text alerts by sending BoroGarbage to 38276.
City and County Schools CLOSED Monday and Tuesday
Murfreesboro City Schools as well as Rutherford County Schools will both remain closed Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 26–27. ESP will be closed on Monday, with updates expected as conditions evolve.
Public Libraries
All Rutherford County Library Branches are closed through Monday (Jan. 26). That's all branches. In addition, their special Called Budget meeting for Monday, Jan. 26, 2026 is cancelled.
For anyone needing a closer look at what’s happening on the roads, the City provides live traffic camera views and an interactive “Snow Routes” map covering state routes, major streets, and secondary roads. The map is available at www.murfreesborotn.gov/SnowRoutes, offering a helpful snapshot of where crews are working and which areas may still be difficult to navigate
