SMYRNA, Tenn. — A 41-year-old man who was airlifted from a Smyrna hospital following a shooting in Antioch has died from his injuries, authorities confirmed. Alexander E. Sanchez-Montilla was shot shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday at a residence on Winton Drive in Antioch. He sustained gunshot wounds to both legs and was transported by a friend driving towards Smyrna while contacting emergency services.
According to investigators in Nashville, Sanchez-Montilla called 911 as he was being driven along Interstate 24 East to TriStar StoneCrest Medical Center in Rutherford County. Metro Police say that after arriving at the Smyrna medical facility, he was airlifted to TriStar Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, where he died early Friday.
Facebook Marketplace Meeting Turns Deadly - Preliminary findings indicate Sanchez-Montilla had traveled to the Winton Drive address to purchase a vehicle listed for sale on Facebook Marketplace. Authorities say he entered the garage of the home and remained there for several minutes before gunshots were heard. Investigators believe Sanchez-Montilla was targeted as he ran from the garage - and back toward the vehicle where his friend was waiting.
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department Homicide Unit is leading the investigation. No additional details about suspect(s) or arrests have been released.
Range of Area During Investigation - While the shooting occurred in Antioch, the incident led the subject into Rutherford County, where Sanchez-Montilla sought emergency medical treatment before being airlifted to Nashville. The case also highlights the broader regional nature of violent crime investigations that often span multiple jurisdictions across Davidson and Rutherford counties.
