MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - Grief has a way of making the world feel smaller, quieter, and heavier than we ever expected. But at the St. Clair Senior Center in Murfreesboro, there’s a place where the age 60+ segment of the population who are carrying loss don’t have to carry it alone. Every Wednesday morning at 10:00, a free Grief Support Group meets in room 301, offering a safe, welcoming space for anyone navigating life after change. The center is located at 325 St. Clair Street.

Grief doesn’t come in just one form. It can follow the death of a loved one, a divorce, a major health diagnosis, the loss of a job, or any life transition that shakes our sense of normal. The weekly group invites participants to take this journey alongside others who understand the emotional and physical weight of loss. The environment is intentionally non‑judgmental, gentle, and supportive—exactly what many people need when they’re trying to find their footing again.

In addition to the Wednesday group, St. Clair also hosts a Widow/Widower Support Group on the second and fourth Friday mornings at 10:00, also in room 301. This gathering focuses on easing the deep sense of isolation that often follows the loss of a spouse. Members share companionship, understanding, and practical guidance as they learn to navigate daily life in a new way. Conversations range from coping strategies and emotional healing to managing responsibilities and rediscovering meaning.

Mental health experts often remind us that grief itself is not unhealthy. In fact, the phrase “good grief,” often tossed around casually, carries a deeper truth. Grief can be “good” in the sense that it honors what mattered. It gives us space to feel, process, and eventually heal. The familiar stages—denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance—don’t always come in order, and they don’t look the same for everyone. But they remind us that grief is a natural human response to love and change.

Reaching out for support is not a sign of weakness. It’s an act of courage. And at St. Clair Senior Center, no one age 60+ has to walk through loss alone. The facility is at 325 St. Clair St. and is a service of the Murfreesboro Parks & Recreation Department.
