La VERGNE, TN (WGNS) - La Vergne Fire and Rescue crews had their hands full after a 911 call reported a fire in the laundry room of a home on Hillview Drive. Everyone inside made it out safely before firefighters arrive. However, the first unit on-the-scene reported that smoke was billowing from the eaves on all sides of the home — an early sign that the fire had found pathways behind the walls.
Units from all three La Vergne fire stations responded. They quickly made entry to track down the source. What they found was fire moving through multiple concealed void spaces, a challenge made worse by additions and renovations to the home that created hidden pockets where flames could travel out of sight.
Firefighters worked methodically to open up those areas and stop the spread. It took about 45 minutes to bring the fire under control. In all, the response included three engine companies, one truck company, and 20 personnel, including command staff.
Mutual aid came from Smyrna Fire Department, Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services, and support from Box 55. One firefighter was treated for minor injuries, and no other injuries were reported.
Battalion Chief Cody Wilson said, "The home’s layout played a major role in how the fire behaved. Additions and renovations can sometimes create hidden spaces that allow fire to spread more rapidly. Our crews worked methodically to locate and extinguish fire that had extended into those concealed areas.”
The La Vergne Fire Department is also reminding residents that they can help first responders prepare for emergencies by enrolling in the Community Connect program at http://LaVergneTN.gov. Keeping details about a home — including the number of occupants, pets, medical needs, and structural features — up to date can give firefighters critical information when every second counts.
