MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Murfreesboro City Schools have recently opened its annual enrollment period for zone waivers from, which began on Feb. 26 and runs through through March 27, 2026, giving families the opportunity to request placement at a school other than the one to which their child is zoned... That was Lisa Trail, director of communications and strategic initiatives for the Murfreesboro City Schools. Parents should be aware that zone waiver applications must be submitted before spring break begins. This year, spring break runs from Monday, March 30, through Friday, April 3, 2026. All waiver application details must be completed and turned in by the Friday before spring break.

During the open enrollment window, parents and guardians may submit one of two types of requests using the same application form: a new zone waiver request or a request for a student currently on a zone waiver to remain at their existing school.

District officials emphasized that zone waiver applications must be completed each year and are valid for only one school year. Approval is contingent upon enrollment numbers and building capacity at each campus.

To help families evaluate their options, Murfreesboro City Schools will host Open Zone School Tours on March 3 and March 12. The tours allow families to visit campuses, meet teachers and administrators, explore academic and extracurricular programs, and learn more about school culture. Some campuses require advance reservations, and families are encouraged to visit individual school websites for booking information.

The district has published a list of schools with available seats for new zone waiver requests. Availability varies by grade level and applies only to new requests, not to students already attending on an existing waiver.

Among the schools with open seats:

Where to Visit the City Schools Online: A complete listing of available seats by school and grade level, along with the zone waiver application, is available on the district’s website at the link: cityschools.net/student-info/registration/zone-waivers.

Families should be aware that students approved for a zone waiver must provide their own transportation. Continued enrollment at the approved school also depends on maintaining strong attendance, appropriate behavior and consistent academic effort.

District leaders said schools across Murfreesboro are looking forward to welcoming families during the March tours and throughout the enrollment process.
