SMYRNA, Tenn. — An investigation is underway after a road rage call in Smyrna escalated into an officer-involved shooting late Thursday morning, leaving one suspect wounded.
Officers with the Smyrna Police Department were dispatched around 11:30 a.m. on March 12, 2026, to the 200 block of South Lowry Street following reports of a road rage incident. According to authorities, the situation unfolded near 201 South Lowry Street, where officers encountered an individual connected to the dispute.
Police say that during the encounter, the situation escalated for reasons that remain under investigation. Preliminary findings indicate that the individual reached for a weapon, prompting two Smyrna police officers to discharge their firearms.
The suspect was struck during the shooting and transported to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released the condition of the individual.
Officials confirmed that no officers were injured during the incident and that the scene was quickly secured, with police stating there was no ongoing threat to the public.
At the request of 16th Judicial District Attorney General Jennings Jones, agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) were called in shortly after the shooting to conduct an independent investigation.
According to the TBI, agents are now working to determine the sequence of events leading up to the shooting. The investigation includes collecting evidence from the scene and conducting interviews with witnesses and involved parties.
Once the investigation is completed, the TBI will submit its findings to the District Attorney General’s Office for review. The District Attorney General will ultimately determine whether the officers’ actions were legally justified.
The TBI emphasized that in officer-involved shooting investigations, the agency serves strictly as fact-finders and does not make determinations regarding justification.
As is standard practice, the TBI does not release the identities of officers involved in such incidents, directing any related questions to the respective law enforcement agency. The investigation remains ongoing.
