RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WGNS) — The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a traffic ticket scam circulating via text message that falsely threatens suspension of driving privileges if payment is not made immediately.
Authorities say several citizens recently reported receiving alarming messages claiming to be from the Tennessee Department of Motor Vehicles. The texts warn recipients that they have an outstanding traffic ticket and must pay immediately or face penalties.
The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that the messages are fraudulent. “This is a scam,” officials stated.
According to reports, the messages threaten consequences designed to pressure recipients into acting quickly. Those threats include suspension of vehicle registration, a 30-day suspension of driving privileges, referral to a collection agency with a 35% administrative fee, and even potential legal action or damage to the recipient’s credit.
Law enforcement officials say one of the clearest warning signs is the phone number itself. The messages originate from numbers beginning with “+63,” which indicates an international number — not a legitimate government agency.
Officials say the language used in the message is also intended to create urgency and fear, increasing the likelihood that someone will click on a link or attempt to pay the supposed fine.
The Sheriff’s Office urges residents not to engage with the message in any way.
“Don’t be tempted,” authorities said. “Simply delete the message and save yourself your hard-earned cash.”
Law enforcement also reminds the public that government agencies do not typically request payment for traffic violations through unsolicited text messages, especially those containing suspicious links.
Anyone who receives a similar message is encouraged to report it to local authorities and avoid clicking on any links or providing personal or financial information.
