MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) — The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has announced a new phase of construction for Interstate 24 that will specifically target two of Murfreesboro’s busiest interchanges. Following a period of heavy milling and paving further north near the Davidson County line, crews are now shifting their focus toward ramp improvements at Exit 76 (Medical Center Parkway) and Exit 81 (US-231/Shelbyville Highway).

The scheduled work is set to begin on the night of Sunday, March 29th, and continue through the morning of Wednesday, April 1st. To protect the safety of workers and minimize the frustration of Rutherford County commuters, the operations are restricted to the overnight hours of 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. During these windows, drivers at Exit 76 can expect single lane closures in both the eastbound and westbound directions.

More significant impacts are anticipated at Exit 81, where multiple westbound lanes will be closed to facilitate the ramp upgrades.

Recognizing the influx of travelers expected for the upcoming holiday weekend, TDOT officials confirmed that a construction "blackout" period will be enforced. All construction-related lane closures across Middle Tennessee will be suspended starting at 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 2nd. This suspension will remain in effect until 6:00 p.m. on Monday, April 6th, providing a clear path for those visiting family or traveling through the region. While the reprieve offers temporary relief, TDOT reminds motorists to remain vigilant as they transition through these ongoing work zones.
