LA VERGNE, Tenn. (WGNS) - La Vergne firefighters stopped a balcony fire from spreading through a large apartment complex. Crews arrived at the Madison Square Apartments Sunday to find flames moving from a second-story porch into the roofline.

Battalion Chief Cody Wilson took command as the fire reached the attic and forced a temporary evacuation of the building for safety. Twenty-five personnel from La Vergne and Smyrna used an aerial device to douse the flames from above.

Fire Marshal Curtis Brinkley says the fire was under control in about 25-minutes. He credits built-in firewalls for stopping the blaze from reaching other homes. While all residents escaped safely, one firefighter suffered a minor injury when a cat bit him during a rescue.

The American Red Cross is now helping those displaced by the fire. Officials say dry conditions in Rutherford County make it critical to dispose of smoking materials properly.
