MIDDLE TENNESSEE - From Chapel Hill to Nashville, a multi-agency manhunt ended this past week after a fugitive wanted on 19 outstanding warrants fell through a ceiling while attempting to evade the U.S. Marshal Service Fugitive Task Force, acccording to police in Nashville.
Authorities tracked 36-year-old Darrius Cane (photo above article) to an apartment complex on Nashboro Boulevard. In a desperate bid to escape, Cane entered an adjoining attic space to hide. The pursuit concluded abruptly when Cane fell through the drywall and landed in a neighbor's living room, where task force officers took him into custody.
The arrest marks the end of a weeks-long search that began following a March 14 traffic stop in the Southeast Precinct. Officers initially pulled over a Dodge Charger driven by Cane for equipment violations, including a lack of tag lights and an unregistered temporary tag. During the encounter, Cane provided a false social security number and date of birth. When police identified him and ordered him to exit the vehicle, Cane accelerated, striking and injuring a patrol officer as he fled the scene.
Investigators later recovered the abandoned Charger. A search of the vehicle yielded a substantial quantity of narcotics, including fentanyl, crystal meth, cocaine, mushrooms, marijuana, and various prescription pills.
Cane faced 19 existing warrants, five of which originated from Marshall County in the Chapel Hill area. Following last Tuesday's incident, he faces new charges of aggravated burglary, evading arrest, and vandalism. Cane is currently held in the Davidson County Jail on a $422,000 bond.
