MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) - June is National Internet Safety Month, and local child advocates are stepping up to help Rutherford County parents protect their kids online. With summer break underway, children are spending more time on smartphones, gaming consoles, and computers. The Child Advocacy Center of Rutherford County is launching a joint effort to provide parents, caregivers, and educators with the tools they need to prevent online exploitation.

Advocates say the most effective tool is regular, open communication. Parents should talk to their children about the websites and apps they visit, while creating a safe space for kids to report uncomfortable online encounters. Local authorities also recommend keeping computers and devices in common areas of the home to monitor activity easily.

Additionally, parents can use built-in filtering tools to block inappropriate content and manage daily screen time. For families looking for extra guidance, the CAC is offering internet safety training sessions tailored for adults and children this month.

If you suspect a child is experiencing abuse or online exploitation, you can call the state report hotline at 877-237-0004, or contact the Rutherford County Child Advocacy Center directly at 615-867-9000.
