MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) - The Salvation Army of Murfreesboro is bringing a sweet, century-old tradition to Rutherford County this weekend. Volunteers are hitting the streets this Friday and Saturday to hand out free donuts to area veterans, first responders, and community helpers.
The initiative marks National Donut Day. The tradition started during World War I when Salvation Army Donut Lassies served treats to American soldiers on the front lines. Local organizers say the event is about remembering a legacy of service, sacrifice, and compassion. They want to spend time with local heroes and thank them for keeping the community safe.
The weekend celebration continues with a major fundraiser on Saturday (June 6th). The Murfreesboro Corps is hosting The Red Shield Car Show to benefit local assistance programs. The event takes place from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at 1137 West Main Street in Murfreesboro.
Participants can show off their rides for a $20 entry fee. Spectators can attend the event for free. The family-friendly day includes awards for Best in Show, the Top 20 vehicles, and more. Residents can also call the Murfreesboro Corps or visit their Facebook page to learn more.
