UPDATE: RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. - Rutherford County fire officials have publicly identified the two individuals found deceased inside a Mount Juliet-area residence following a fire investigation that remains active. According to information released Tuesday, June 9, by the Rutherford County Fire Marshal’s Office, the deceased victims were identified as 73-year-old Cornelia Sue Riehl of Mt. Juliet and 63-year-old Alfred Eugene Riehl of Mt. Juliet.
Authorities stated that a criminal investigation surrounding the incident remains ongoing and is being led by the Rutherford County Fire Marshal’s Office. Officials also confirmed there are currently no additional individuals considered subjects in the case.
The investigation stems from an incident reported Saturday, June 6, at a single-family home located on Ashwood Drive. While the residence carries a Mount Juliet mailing address, county mapping records show the property falls within Rutherford County jurisdiction.
The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office was initially dispatched to the home around 6:00 p.m. to conduct a welfare check. Upon arriving at the property, deputies discovered evidence indicating a fire had previously occurred inside the residence and requested assistance from Rutherford County Fire Rescue.
Fire crews responded to the location and determined there was no active blaze upon arrival. Investigators with the Rutherford County Fire Marshal’s Office were later called to the scene by sheriff’s deputies to assist with determining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
During the investigation, two adults and a dog were located inside the residence. All three were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Officials say the Rutherford County Fire Marshal’s Office continues coordinating the inquiry alongside the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, the La Vergne Police Department Crime Scene Unit, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Authorities have not released additional details regarding the cause of the fire or the circumstances surrounding the deaths as investigators continue processing evidence connected to the case.
