UPDATE: JACKSON, TN (WGNS) - Murfreesboro Police spent part of Wednesday morning clearing up confusion after initial reports suggested the man accused of trying to rob Ascend Federal Credit Union on Memorial Boulevard had been taken into custody. MPD PIO Larry Flowers told media that the information released Tuesday evening was incorrect — the suspect was never caught.
The Lebanon Police Department reports that a suspect believed to be 47-year-old George David Treece of Kentucky was identified in surveilance photos at an earlier armed robbery at Truist Bank in nearby Lebanon. Photos from the unsuccessful armed robbery attempt in Murfreesboro show both subjects may be the same person.
Flowers said officers now know the man ran from law enforcement into a wooded area near Jackson, Tennessee. Authorities in West Tennessee searched for roughly six hours overnight before suspending the effort. As of this (Wednesday, 6/17/2026) morning, the suspect remains at large.
The pickup truck identified in both cases, along with evidence tied to the case, has been recovered. Investigators say the male was tracked to the Jackson area through license‑plate readers (LPR) and other technology shortly after the attempted robbery in Murfreesboro. Officers conducted a felony stop on the truck in Jackson, but the suspect bolted into nearby woods and disappeared.
The man is facing an attempted aggravated robbery charge for Tuesday’s (6/16/2026) incident at Ascend Federal Credit Union. Police say he didn’t get away with any money. He is also wanted for an aggravated robbery in Lebanon, where he’s accused of successfully holding up a bank.
Flowers emphasized again that earlier reports claiming the suspect had been detained by Jackson authorities were simply wrong. The man abandoned the truck, ran, and has not been seen since.
The investigation remains active, with detectives from multiple agencies comparing evidence from both robberies and continuing to follow leads. Residents in the West Tennessee area — especially around Jackson — are urged to call 9‑1‑1 immediately if they spot the suspect or anything suspicious.
Police say they’ll release additional updates as they learn more.
