MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - Downtown Murfreesboro is about to gain a brand‑new landmark, and it’s one built tile by tile by the hands of local residents. This coming  Friday, July 3, the grassy area beside Shacklett’s Photography will become the gathering spot for the unveiling of the USA 250 Mural Mosaic, a community‑created art piece celebrating America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. The debut is part of Main Street Murfreesboro’s Friday Night Live festivities, making it a perfect lead‑in to Independence Day weekend.

The mural, titled The Patriot’s Flag, is an 8‑by‑16‑foot outdoor installation composed of 650 individually hand‑painted tiles. What makes it special isn’t just its size or its patriotic theme—it’s the sheer number of local hands that helped bring it to life. Children, veterans, seniors, families, volunteers, and civic partners all contributed tiles throughout the spring, turning a national milestone into a deeply local expression of pride.

Once installed on the historic Shacklett’s Photography building at 105 South Church Street, the mural will face the open green space across from the Rutherford County Historic Courthouse. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting spot for a piece meant to reflect Murfreesboro’s heritage, creativity, and democratic spirit.

“This project represents the very best of Murfreesboro—neighbors, families, artists, public servants, and local organizations coming together to tell our story,” said Main Street Murfreesboro's Executive Director Sarah Callender. She noted that as the nation prepares to mark 250 years of independence, the mural offers residents a chance to leave a lasting mark on history.

The project comes together through a partnership between Main Street Murfreesboro, the City of Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation, Murfreesboro Public Libraries, Rutherford County Government, and other community groups. Mural Mosaic supplied the framework, while local hubs hosted painting sessions that brought people together tile by tile.

The public is invited to attend the unveiling at 6:00 p.m., then stroll over to Friday Night Live on the Public Square, where Entice will perform from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. With downtown restaurants and shops open, the evening promises to be festive, family‑friendly, and full of hometown spirit—just the way Murfreesboro likes to start a holiday weekend.
