The book tells of this trailblazing athlete, and the civil rights movement and race in America, a campus in transition during the tumultuous 1960s, the mental toll of pioneering, decades of ostracism, and eventual reconciliation and healing.

Maraniss is also a Vanderbilt graduate, who majored in history and was the recipient of the Fred Russell - Grantland Rice sportswriting scholarship, earning the school's Alexander Award for excellence in journalism and graduating in 1992.

He stayed in Nashville and was Vandy's associate director of media relations for five-years. After that he served as media director of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays during the team's inaugural year. After that he returned to Music City and joined the staff of McNeely Pigott & Fox Public Relations. Andrew and his family now call Brentwood their home.

Again, Andrew Maraniss will speak at Murfreesboro's First Presbyterian Church at 6:00 o'clock this coming Tuesday evening (5/9/2017).
