A 35-year old Arnette Street man was arrested after a Murfreesboro Police officer heard a crash and saw cars leaving the scene. Dean Smythia allegedly hit a vehicle on the square around 1:30 Thursday morning. According to reports, Smythia's vehicle was being followed by another down East Main Street. An officer stopped the second car, who told them he was following the person who left the wreck scene. Officers were able to find the car Smythia was driving in a parking lot, with lights off, on Highland Avenue. The officer reports smelling alcohol on Smythia. While admitting to hitting the vehicle, he refused field sobriety tests. He was, however, transported because of two prior DUI's and suspicion of drinking. Smythia was taken to St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital after reportedly making threats to his life. While there, a warrant for a blood test were served. Smythia was booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on 65-hundred dollars bond. He faces charges for a third DUI, violation of the implied consent law, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and felony evading. Smythia will be in court to answer to those charges January 17th.
