The opening reception for ADD TO BAG, a group exhibition by Cindy Hinant, Derek Larson + Marc Mitchell, will be held Monday, September 25, 2017 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. The exhibition and reception at the MTSU Todd Art Gallery in Todd Hall, room 224A are free and open to the public.

Cindy Hinant received her Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) from Herron School of Art and Design, Indianapolis, IN and her Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) from the School of Visual Arts, New York City. Currently, Hinant creates in her Brooklyn, NY studio. Derek Larson received his B.F.A. from Herron School of Art and Design and his M.F.A. from Yale School of Art, New Haven, CT. Larson is an associate professor of art at Georgia Southern University. Marc Mitchell received his B.F.A. from the University of Tampa and his M.F.A. from Boston University. Currently, Mitchell is chair of the University of Arkansas art department.

This collaborative exhibit features paintings and wall projections by Larson and Mitchell. Hinant offers works of video, audio, internet and digital technologies that utilize performance and traditional art mediums that reflect on popular representations of femininity. The exhibit was originally intended as a two-person exhibit entitled, "A Monk," inspired by Philip Guston's "Painting, Smoking, Eating." It soon grew to include the complementary and contrasting aspects offered through Hinant's work.

According to Larson when the exhibit was proposed to MTSU he and Mitchell were keeping daily records of everyday activities and exchanging the information as a set of rules in creating new work. Details, Larson describes as, "...the number of steps [that} were taken in a day, calories burned, studio dimensions, time spent on the internet, sleep duration, etc., were tracked by fitness and sleep apps. Our studios are separated by 900 miles, the project became an ascetic exchange and an abstract, devout exercise in making for someone not present. Cindy's inclusion became an extension that asked us to reconsider our artistic approach to this project."

ADD TO BAG: Cindy Hinant, Derek Larson + Marc Mitchell will be on display at Todd Art Gallery September 25-October 18, 2017. Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.
