Letter carriers will be picking up non-perishable food donations for the Rutherford County Emergency Food Bank again this year. The drive is May 10, the Saturday before Mother’s Day. It is the biggest single day food drive in the nation.

Residents are urged to place canned and boxed food (no glass containers please) into a sturdy bag and either hang it on the mailbox or leave it next to the mailbox. Canned meats, canned fruits, dried beans, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, and rice are among the most needed items.

The increasing demand for food assistance has put a strain on the Rutherford County Emergency Food Bank. The Food Bank serves the city of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County with the exception of cities of Smyrna and LaVergne, who have their own food banks. The Rutherford County Emergency Food Bank is committed to helping the citizens of this area to provide basic food items for individuals and families in temporary need of help.

While the Post Service Food Drive is a large event, the Rutherford County Emergency Food Bank also receives donated items from various other drives and regular donations from churches, civic organizations, youth groups, local businesses and individuals. Other needed food items are purchased locally or from the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee with money that has been donated to the Rutherford County Emergency Food Bank.

The Rutherford County Emergency Food Bank is located in the McFadden Community Center at 211 Bridge Avenue. The hours are 10 am – 3 pm, Monday through Friday, except for legal holidays.
