LOCAL UPDATE Delta Variant

(MURFREESBORO)  When we thought coronavirus conditions were improving and the pandemic was fading, the Covid-19 Delta variant appeared.  Not only are Tennessee statistics showing increases, but Rutherford County numbers are trending upward as well.

The restaurant industry has been one of the hardest hit during the pandemic, and Peter Demos told NewsRadio WGNS . . .

One of the problems is a shortage of workers. Whether it’s restaurants, law enforcement, retail, construction, fire fighters—all are feeling the pinch of too few coming back into the job market. Leaders can’t agree on what is causing workers to stay at home, but the “cures” seem to be “politically” aligned.

Seeing the economic impact of the pandemic on our economy, local business leaders are concerned with what the Delta variant could bring.

Educators continue to analyze the impact that a year out of the classroom has had on students and faculty. Most authorities agree that the loss to students is much more than confined to knowledge, it includes the problems resulting from dramatically reduced in-person social interactions.

When asked about required "mask mandates", Rutherford County Mayor Bill Ketron told NewsRadio WGNS.

As activities were moving toward a more “normal” direction, the Delta variant exploded onto the world. Rutherford County is feeling the impact as well.

An example being one from a church congregation that was cautiously returning to meetings without masks, Sunday School, activities with meals, and congregational singing—when a non-church activity in which many members attended exposed one person of the congregation.

Health officials are watching as a few days later two more members tested positive for the virus after they attended an event at the church.

County Mayor Ketron notes that vaccinated persons are not immune to the virus . . .

Delta Variant

The American Society of Microbiology website reports , “The Delta variant is 40-60% more transmissible than Alpha and almost twice as transmissible as the original Wuhan strain of SARS-CoV-2. Furthermore, significantly more viral particles have been found in the airways of patients infected with the Delta variant.”

What Should You Do

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) is encouraging wearing masks and practicing social distancing. Using common sense is advised with the thought that outdoor gatherings might be less risky than gatherings in confined places.

The CDC’s notes, “Wearing a mask is most important if you have a weakened immune system or if, because of your age or an underlying medical condition, you are at increased risk for severe disease, or if someone in your household has a weakened immune system, is at increased risk for severe disease, or is unvaccinated. If this applies to you or your household, you might choose to wear a mask regardless of the level of transmission in your area.”

NewsRadio WGNS will continue to have guests from Ascension St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital along with local physicians giving updates throughout the day until some feeling of normalcy returns.
