Burnette Church of Christ Minister Speaks

The minister of Burnette Church of Christ, who was among the wounded when a gunman entered this past Sunday, speaks for the first time since the ordeal.

Joey Spann says he heard popping noises and then saw a man wearing a mask:


Spann's wife, Peggy, was among the injured as well when Emanuel Samson allegedly opened fire in the church.

The pastor also said some of the women of the church are nurses and began first aid prior to paramedics arriving.


Melanie Crow Smith was killed outside the church before the gunman made his way inside.


60-year old David Spann, pastor of the church, was shot and is in critical, but stable condition at Vanderbilt Medical Center.
