Drivers will be checked for wearing seat belts during a checkpoint from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 27 near Rockvale by Rutherford County Sheriff's Office deputies partnering with the Governor's Highway Safety Office.

Deputies will check seat belts use on state Route 99 (New Salem Highway) in front of Rockvale Middle School.

Seat belts save lives. Getting that message across will be part of the checkpoint's drive to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries. About 10,000 traffic crashes were reported in 2014 in Rutherford County, a significant increase from the previous year. These crashes resulted in 3,000 injuries and caused a nearly 30 percent increase in traffic fatalities.

During the checkpoint, child passenger safety technicians will inspect children's car seats for free to make sure the seats are installed correctly.
