Bob Gerard, Rutherford County executive of Fifth Third Bank, and Jennifer Williams, controller of Murfreesboro Medical Clinic, will co-chair the upcoming Rutherford Heart Walk on September 19 at Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital.

The walk is a major fundraiser for the American Heart Association in Rutherford County, allowing the association to carry on its lifesaving work locally. Funds raised go to research, community education and public health programs.

Over a thousand people, including many company and community teams, will walk to support the association's mission to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Companies play a vital role in both the Heart Walk fundraising effort, which starts a year before the event, and in advancing wellness in the community in general. The chairs have been active in supporting both areas.

"I support the Heart Walk to help bring awareness to the community about heart disease and our real opportunity to prevent or at least detect the issue early," said Gerard. "I have lost several family members to this disease and want to make a difference with others."

"I believe the Heart Walk brings more awareness to the community," said Williams. "It may help save lives by teaching that exercise and healthy eating habits can decrease chances of developing heart disease. I think the Heart Walk makes a difference."

Nearly 787,000 Americans, including about 18,000 Tennesseans, lose their lives each year to cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Heart disease is still the No. 1 cause of death of Americans, and stroke is No. 5.
