New cars get better gas mileage, which no one has complained about until now. Tennessee is seeing fewer tax dollars being generated at the gas pump do to hybrid and electric vehicles. Right now, roads like Broad Street are repaired with funds that are generated through the sale of gasoline, but fewer people are spending less on gas because the government is requiring auto makers to make more fuel efficient rides.

State Representative Bryan Terry of Murfreesboro chimed in on the issue...

There is currently talk both on the state level and in the federal government to raise the tax on fuel. Right now, Tennesseans pay about 40 cents in tax on every gallon of gas. Diesel cost Tennessee residents 42 cents per gallon.

The state tax on gas has not been raised since 1989. The federal tax was last raised in 1993.
