Murfreesboro is growing and residents in the Shores Road/Veterans Parkway area are feeling the growing pains after they showed up to speak out in opposition to the changes in the zoning of 19.6 acres of the nearly 207 acres Westlawn PUD located along Veterans Parkway and Shores Road.

Homeowners expressed concern over what type of buildings may be established on this portion of the development even after being assured that any development proposed within this area will meet design standards.

Larry Tipton. who lives across the street from the rezoned property, says it goes against what residents were originally told would happen with the property:

Some examples of the types of businesses that would be able to build up after the changes to the zoning include Adult Daycare Home, Crafts Store, Home Improvement Center and several other mainly retail business types.

Kenneth Hawkins called the rezoning an injustice driven by money stating:

Ultimately at the end of the public hearing council voted unanimously to go forward with the rezoning.

Mike Tanner commended the council and the staff on their handling of the just passed budget, he asked for the council to apply the same measure of leadership in the handling of this rezoning issue. Ultimately he summarized "this rezoning to commercial plan is just plain wrong."

Beth Spivey stated that she and her husband were strongly opposed to the rezoning and reminded Council "We're not any different than any of you that sit on City Council or planning, we understand progress is going to happen, the majority of which is good, but my guess is you want your home, your investment protected just like we do."

Ultimately at the end of the public hearing council voted unanimously to go forward with the rezoning.
