The Decennial Census will begin in the United States in 1-year. All of the mayors in Rutherford County kicked-off the important planning year ahead at 10:30AM Monday (4/1/2019) morning on the steps of the historic Rutherford County courthouse on the Murfreesboro square.

Although it looked like spring, there was a southerly wind and temps were around 47, which gave a wind index of 43-degrees. That's why the expressions on some faces are "tense" in some of the news photos.

It was certainly no April Fool's joke when Rutherford County Mayor Bill Ketron shared the importance of every resident being counted . . .

Confidentiality

Census employees working to complete the 2020 census next year, take an oath (Article 19 of the U.S. Code) subject to a $250,000 fine and/or jail, if they violate this law.

Easier

At the Rutherford County presentation, it was stressed that ther 2020 Census will be easier to respond to. Entries will be submitted by mail, phone, and on-line. Plus, census questionaires are available in multiple languages to ensure that all residents can easily and accurately respond.

Just remember, since each person counted represents $1,091. That means for every 100,000 residents, Rutherford County receives more than $109-million. Look at it another way, that's $109-million in money that pays for police, fire, solid waste and more that we don't have to include in our property taxes. That's right--YOU get the benefit.

Keep in mind, that $109-million is for 100,000 persons. The 2019 estimated population for Rutherford County is 317,000, and with the exploding growth--2020 may bring some shocking increases. The more persons we can validate, the less property taxes you have to pay. And don't think that because you rent instead of own, that you don't pay property taxes. Most landlords figure that into the rent that you pay.
