A 43-year-old man died after brandishing a firearm and threatening Rutherford County Sheriff's Office deputies outside his home late Wednesday night.

Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh says deputies responded to a domestic call about 9:38 p.m. at the Cascade subdivision near Walter Hill.

"They learned an armed man was in the house with three potential hostages," Fitzhugh said.

Two people exited the home but a third person was unable to leave because of medical reasons.

The Sheriff's Crisis Negotiations Team deputies started negotiations with the man.

"After about one hour of negotiations, the man exited the house brandishing a firearm and officers engaged," Fitzhugh said. "The man is deceased. Our deputies were not harmed."

The man's name is not being released yet until relatives are notified.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents are investigating.
