Murfreesboro Electric Department (MED) is warning customers to be aware of the latest scam that is targeting residential customers, local business owners, and ethnic restaurants. The scammers threaten to cut off the power if payment is not made immediately. The customers are instructed to purchase a prepaid credit card or money order and then to call a provided number to make a payment.
MED does not call customers to request payments.
The scammer has also been able to manipulate the caller ID system to cause it to appear as if the call is coming from MED. The recording on their voice mail is a copy of MED's answering system.
If you receive a call that you suspect could be a scam
- Get the name of the caller
- Get the phone number off your Caller ID
- Contact MED at 615-893-5514
The Murfreesboro Police Department urges anyone who receives a suspicious call to file a police report. In most cases, you can do this over the phone by calling 615-893-1311.
