Eagleville football coach Steve Carson was fired by principal Bill Tollett today (Monday). Tollett says the administration would like to see the leadership of the program go in a different direction.

Tollett told Monte Hale, Jr. of the Murfreesboro Post the administration would like to see the leadership of the program go in a different direction. He also said Floyd Walker will serve as the interim head coach until a new head coach is hired and all other assistant coaches will remain in place.

"He's an honest man, and there's no underlying story or nothing inapproapriate," Tollett said. "We feel like the program needed a shot in the arm. We thought we needed some change and new leadership. We're keeping the same staff. "We'll be looking from within first, and then will see.

"Over the last three years we haven't seen eye to eye on a few issues in direction the program is going in. We just wanted to see some new leadership."

Eagleville's football season ended last Thursday at Boyd Buchanan with a 41-0 loss. This year marked the seventh consecutive playoff appearance for the program. The Eagles finished the season at 5-and-6.

"I was called in this morning and told that I was being fired," Carson said. "I wish there was something else I could add to it, but there was no reason given.

"I'm extremely disappointed being fired from Eagleville football, but having said that I have no regrets about how I ran the program the last eight years. I think we did things the right way.

"I feel like I was a good role model for the kids and I hope they can take things off the field and become good, young adults. I gave my heart and every ounce of energy I had to Eagleville. I wish them nothing but the best. They're good kids and I hope they exceed the level I was able to lead them to in the upcoming years."

Carson will remain as a faculty member at Eagleville, but said he wouldn't rule out coaching again. "I enjoy it, so we'll see. These plans aren't in my hand," he said. "We'll see where God leads this whole thing to. I'm not in control here, so there's no reason for me to act like I am.

"Being a football coach is what I do, but it's not who I am. I enjoy being a football coach and being around kids, but at the end of day it doesn't define me as a person. Yes, I'd like to keep coaching, but we'll see."

Carson, who was an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Smyrna with then coach Philip Shadowens during their back to back state championship, was 53-39 from 2008-2015 at Eagleville.
