Murfreesboro’s 12th Annual Earth Day Celebration will take place April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Murfreesboro’s historic downtown square. Organizers are expecting a record number of visitors to attend the event – an extravaganza that offers a wide variety of activities for young and old alike.

The day’s activities will include free popcorn, hotdogs and drinks and door prizes. There will also be games and other kid-specific activities. To top it off, 500 Paw Paw tree seedlings will be given away on a first-come first-served basis.

This year we are dedicating the Celebration to butterflies because they are losing valuable habitat due to the growth of our community. There will be an exhibit showing the lifecycle of butterflies, as well as educational information on how to bring butterflies to your own back yard. There will also be nearly 30 informational booths offering information on other earth-friendly topics and services.

Returning this year to provide entertainment are MTSU’s Jazz Ensemble, Creative Rhythm, a local percussion ensemble and the Eclectics (premier guitarist Larry Pinkerton and Friends).

For the first time, Murfreesboro Electric Department (MED) has partnered with TVA Green Power Switch program to offset all the power used at the Earth Day Celebration with renewable energy. This means that 100 percent of the electricity that is used during the Celebration will be matched with energy that comes from Valley sources that are renewable such as wind, solar, and biogas. The Green Power Switch program gives customers an opportunity to purchase power that has been produced by renewable resources such as wind, solar and biogas. For more information on the Green Power Switch Program visit www.greenpowerswitch.com or contact MED. MED is a major sponsor of the event and its personnel will be on hand to help explain the program and sign up residential and commercial green power consumers. Louie the Lightning Bug will also be there to greet everyone.

Sponsors in addition to MED include General Mills and its local subsidiary Pillsbury, whose mascot the Pillsbury Dough Boy will make an appearance. Mr. Wegs, the company’s environmental mascot, will also attend to represent the company’s commitment to conservation.

Other sponsors are MaxShred, Murfreesboro City Schools, Kroger, Inc., Lewis Brothers Bakery, the City of Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Rutherford County Schools and All in One Recycling.
