Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Department is initiating a new program this summer. Aimed at females from the ages of 8 to 11 years-old, Empower Girl’s Beginning Running Program is a six week course that combines different levels of training that will culminate in a participant being able to run one-mile.
But it is not all about running. It will include informational conversation on fitness, nutrition and personal self-esteem. Jennifer Joines, Wellness Fitness Coordinator at Sports*Com, along with Tori McDaniel, a certified personal trainer, will head the program.
“Each time we meet we will discuss a topic that maybe of concern to young girls” said Joines. “We will discuss topics such as friendship, positive talk, personal strengths and standing up for yourself such as addressing bullying. Team work, personal value along with several other topics will be part of the program. Everything that Tori and I do will be to empower the girls to be a better person on the outside as well as the inside.”
The running portion will start slowly and add manageable distances for a beginner to eventually accomplish a one-mile run. If a girl wants to add distance, they will not be held back. A pool component is also part of the one hour program with 30-minutes spent as a running activity and 30-minutes of activity in the shallow end of the Sports*Com outdoor pool. All laced with educational and interactive discussions.
“We will take girls that are already moving and help them move further,” said Joines. “The theme each day will help them empower themselves. We will empower them to bigger and better things in life. We want them to move through life having better esteem for themselves.”
The program will also have a Get Your Gear Day at Dick’s Sporting Goods. Empower participants and their parents will be able to try on exercise gear and get advice on choosing the appropriate running clothes. Each Empower girl will receive a discount card toward a purchase.
The program is offered from June 16 thru July 30. Meeting on Monday and Wednesday of each week from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Sports*Com, the cost is $40 for each girl. Registration will close on June 13. There is also an opportunity for individuals or a business to sponsor a participant. For more information on the program call Sport*Com at 895-5040 or contact Joines at email@example.com.
“We want to celebrate being a girl and empower them,” said Joines. “We want to increase physical, mental and emotional strength of pre-teen girls through our program.”
