A man who told police that he just became homeless and that he was a gang member was arrested for possessing a handgun.

Police say when they first came into contact with Hampton, he lied about his identity. He later came clean and told Murfreesboro Police that he had the gun for his protection because he was homeless. He then told officers that he is a "Gangster Disciple" gang member and that "He was carrying the handgun because he doesn't get along with the local Blood members," according to the report at the MPD.

Hampton, who is from Holiday, Tennessee, was charged with "Felon in possession of a firearm" and "Criminal impersonation." The man will appear in court on June 30, 2016.

As of Monday, Hampton was still behind bars.
