In 2015, volunteers with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program filed nearly 730 tax returns resulting in over $1 million returned into Rutherford and Cannon counties.

United Way board member Billy Bruce stated...

IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. The average tax payer can save as much as $200 in tax preparation fees. Through the VITA Program, individuals and families can keep the money they have earned. The opportunity to file through the VITA program supports United Way's focus to increase financial stability for individuals and families in the community.

United Way VITA sites are located at Patterson Park Community Center in Murfreesboro and Smyrna Assembly Hall. Walk-ins are encouraged at the Patterson Park site on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, however, appointments are necessary to file at the Smyrna Assembly Hall location. To schedule an appointment, call (615) 971-8678. The deadline to file at VITA site locations is April 16, 2016.
