Local literacy non-profit Read To Succeed and Murfreesboro City Schools’ Community Outreach Program are teaming up to bring the community a night of free family fun.

On March 21 from 5 to 7 pm at Black Fox Elementary, families are invited to enjoy food, free books, games and entertainment for Me & My Family Night.

Murfreesboro City Schools Community Outreach Coordinator Candy Clifford says that Me & My Family Night will help encourage families to focus on reading at home. Parents need to get involved in their children’s literacy development, Clifford says, to give them an edge in all aspects of their education.

Discovery Center will be at Black Fox for the event showcasing some of their animals and Linebaugh Library will have a puppet show. There will also be a Book Walk (just like a classic Cake Walk but with books to take home and keep), literacy crafts and more fun activities. Dinner will be provided by Jason’s Deli.

A few lucky families in attendance will walk away with some great prizes, as well: giveaways include an Xbox 360, a Nook e-reader, an iPod and more.

Families from all local schools are invited to attend.

Focusing on reading and language is a key to success in school, says Murfreesboro City Schools ELL Liaison Marisela Tapia.

“No matter what language our students and their parents speak, language skills need to be improved in order to succeed in daily life,” Tapia says.

And above all else, Me & My Family Night is a great opportunity for families to enjoy a night together, says Read To Succeed Executive Director Lisa Mitchell.

“We all lead such busy lives,” Mitchell says, “it’s always great to have a night you can spend with your family where dinner is taken care of and you can just learn and enjoy time together.”
