Residents near Middle Tennessee State University's (MTSU) campus will soon be safer as crews from the State Fire Marshal's Office (SFMO) and Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department join forces with MTSU athletes to install free smoke alarms on Wednesday, April 20, 2016. The canvass is the latest example of teamwork between local fire departments and the SFMO to help prevent fire deaths in Tennessee.

"Collaboration is crucial to the mission of saving lives and property," said State Fire Marshal and Commerce & Insurance Commissioner Julie Mix McPeak. "We are excited to work with MTSU's student athletes and are grateful for the ongoing support of local fire departments like Murfreesboro Fire and Rescue."

Since its inception in 2012, the SFMO and more than 450 Tennessee fire service partners have distributed over 100,000 smoke alarms throughout Tennessee as part of the "Get Alarmed, Tennessee!" program. Smoke alarms distributed through the program are credited with saving 129 Tennesseans from fire danger so far and helped lower Tennessee's fire fatality rate to a new all-time low in 2015.

Working in conjunction with local homeowners, organizers hope to reach at least 200 homes during Wednesday's canvass. The crews will be going door-to-door in various locations near the MTSU campus installing free smoke alarms and providing fire safety educational materials to residents.
