The principal at LaVergne High School has notified parents about a handgun being confiscated on campus Friday afternoon. All students were safe but during the incident.
Additional information is not being released at this time because of an ongoing criminal investigation by the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office.
The message that went to parents was as follows:
"This is Principal Dirk Ash with LaVergne High School. I want to let you know about an incident we addressed this afternoon. Through a tip, the school resource officer learned there was a student with a gun on campus. The student was searched and immediately detained after a handgun was found in his backpack. We cannot release additional information at this time because law enforcement is conducting a full investigation, but all students are safe. We wanted to keep you informed before rumors begin. We will keep you posted if anything changes, but please know that student safety is our first priority. Thank you for your time and continued support of LaVergne High School."
