High foot traffic and the constant smell of marijuana brought in police to a Murfreesboro apartment complex on Dill Lane. When the first police officer arrived, he followed his nose to the suspected apartment where the odor of marijuana could be smelled.

The officer knocked on the door and as it was opened the arresting officer wrote in his report, “I was overwhelmed by the odor of raw marijuana.” The person who opened the door, Richard Brown, was said to be the resident of the apartment, according to the report.

The MPD arrest report showed that Brown told police he smoked marijuana with his electronic cigarette. Brown then told police there was a small amount of marijuana hidden in the couch. The weed was recovered and police then asked for permission to search Browns’ cellphone. After receiving consent, several hundred text messages indicative of drug sales were found. That was when the Vice Unit was called in to further investigate.

When authorities begin questioning Brown further, he admitted to selling marijuana. A half-pound of Mary Jane was then recovered from a closet in the apartment along with $3,000 in cash. At that point, Brown was placed in handcuffs and charged with felony possession of a schedule six drug and possession of drug paraphernalia. He will appear in court this August.
