Helping those in Need during Christmas
By Scott Walker
This picture is simple, yet magical. Notice the smile on the face of the man receiving his hotel room key? He usually lives in the woods during the Christmas holiday - - in a small tent with a damp, cold floor. But that was not the case on Christmas Eve or Christmas night either.
Over the two day period, this man will have his own room, his own shower and his own TV, thanks to Barnabas Vision, David Coggin, Adam Coggin and the entire Coggin family. Not only did this man have two nights at the Ramada Inn, but so did 22 of his homeless friends.
As folks were checking in I heard comments like, "I was just released from the hospital after a bout with pneumonia and now I get to fully recover in a warm hotel room instead of my tent." Another man said, "I can't wait to take a hot shower." A woman laughed as she drank a cup of coffee and said, "I usually don't drink coffee because it runs right through me, tonight it won't matter because I will have a real bathroom." Simple things were celebrated tonight. One man showed up in wet clothes, he was given new, clean dry clothing before checking into his hotel room.
Volunteers like David and Ruth Estes, Patsy Bly Briley, Axl David, Jason Bennett, Tracy Tucker, John Sneed and many more made this day successful with fresh pizza delivered to each hotel room and more.
On Christmas Day, the 23 homeless men and women had a meal fit for a king at Kirkenburts Restaurant on Cason Lane, thanks to owner Tom Palmer. Volunteers like Kris Miller and others were on hand to make the meal even better with homemade deserts!
Christmas was indeed, excellent in Murfreesboro.
