At 10:00 o'clock Thursday (7/21/11) morning the dining room at the Patterson Community Center was packed with a cross-section of community leaders for a Bicentennial Planning session. Murfreesboro Mayor Tommy Bragg explained that on October 17, 1811, the small village of Cannonsburgh was chartered at the fork of Town and Lytle Creeks.

The mayor chuckled, "In it's wisdom, the state came back on November 19, 1811 and officially changed the name to Murfreesborough."

Bragg noted that the year of celebrations begin October 17th on the Murfreesboro Civic Plaza as a part of the area's Annual Heritage Day Celebration. He said, "There will be a theme for each month through October, 2012." Those include everything from faith, music, roads and rails, medicine, stories--even "future".

Plus, this coming Christmas Parade on Sunday, December 11th carries the "Bicentennial Theme".
