A 13-year-old Smyrna boy was charged with felony manufacturing explosive devices after a homemade device was found Wednesday during a search of his home. Rutherford County Sheriff’s school resource officer Capt. Barry Hendrixson says the boy apparently disclosed the information about making the devices when his Smyrna Middle School teacher asked eighth grade students how they spent their summer. The teacher alerted SRO Bucky Watts, who along with SRO supervisors, detectives and patrol officers obtained consent from the boy’s mother to search her home on Stokes Drive in Smyrna. Tennessee Highway Patrol’s bomb squad removed the devices while Smyrna Police and Smyrna Fire Departments assisted. SRO Lt. Brad Harrison said the boy’s mother cooperated with the investigation. The boy was taken to the Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center for processing. A hearing is pending in Juvenile Court. Sheriff Robert F. Arnold says this is another good example of agencies working together quickly to keep the community safe.
