To celebrate the end of Fire Prevention Week the La Vergne Fire Department is teaming up with the La Vergne Public Library to put on a special children’s program.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign is “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!” The campaign works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.

On Saturday, October 10 Fire Marshal Curtis Brinkley will be outside the library reading “The Story of Sparky the Fire Dog” as part of the Library’s Storytime Program. He will also have copies of the book to give out to participants. Social distancing will be in place and face coverings are encouraged for participants. A fire truck and crew will accompany the fire marshal to give kids a look inside and to also learn more about being a fire fighter. Storytime begins at 2:00 p.m.

According to National Fire Protection Association, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in the United States. Almost half (44%) of reported home fires started in the kitchen. Two-thirds (66%) of home cooking fires start with the ignition of food or other cooking materials.
