For many, weight loss is tough and diets can be challenging, but the reward at the end of the battle is rewarding. Losing weight can equal not only a better quality of life, but also an extended lifespan.

Dr. Stephen Allen Rich with Saint Thomas Rutherford told WGNS NEWS that people often give-up before reaching their goals…

Often, trauma and mental health problems can lead a person to weight gain and obesity...

Bariatric surgery can often prove to be life changing.

Most people don’t look at obesity as they should – and that is looking at it as a disease...

CDC Reports on BMI Rating:

"If your BMI is less than 18.5, it falls within the underweight range. If your BMI is 18.5 to <25, it falls within the normal. If your BMI is 25.0 to <30, it falls within the overweight range. If your BMI is 30.0 or higher, it falls within the obesity range." - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

In a Snapshot, Who Qualifies for Bariatric Surgery?

An individual doesn’t have to weigh 500 pounds to qualify for bariatric surgery.  Dr. Rich says a patient with high blood pressure and diabetes can qualify for bariatric surgery if they have a body mass index (BMI) rating of 35 to 40. He also said those without diabetes or high blood pressure can qualify for the surgery if their BMI is 40 or above.
