La Vergne Middle team wins basketball championship

La Vergne Middle was crowned Rutherford County's Middle School Boys' Basketball champions on Saturday Jan. 26, 2013. The team defeated Christiana Middle School with a score of 44-43.

The trio of Bryce Williams, Vincent Helms and Maleik Gray scored all but two of the Red Hawks’ points. Helms had 13 and Gray added 12, according to the Daily News Journal.  The team is coached by Thurman Tucker, coaching his first-year.

“We were thrilled when we heard about La Vergne Middle winning the county basketball championship,” said Mayor Senna Mosley. “These players – like numerous others in our student population – bring a great deal of pride to our city. We are looking forward to honoring them at our Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting.”

Team members maintain a team grade point average of a 3.0. The team has been invited to receive a certificate commendation from the city on Tuesday, February 5.
