The homeless community continues to grow as Rutherford County grows.

In the City of Murfreesboro, government officials struggle to respond to their needs while also protecting property values and keeping the downtown area clean. Evidently, some property owners around and near the square have seen an increase in litter after meals are served to the homeless.

To combat the additional litter left behind by those receiving free meals, the city may soon require a permit to serve those meals…

That was City Manager Craig Tindall. The issue of groups or organizations being required to obtain a permit to serve meals is under consideration.

Food Distribution (Continued)

The city is looking to regulate food sharing events on public property. The new rules would focus on what locations could be used for food distribution, enforcement mechanisms and certification requirements.

The Council recently discussed the need to address sanitation issues with food distribution, having fees for permits and the upcoming formation of a Murfreesboro Police homeless taskforce.

At this point, it appears as if there will likely be some type of permit required for food distribution on public property.
