Chief of Police Glenn Chrisman and the law enforcement agencies of Rutherford County participated in a memorial service in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day 2013 on Thursday. The event was a success. 

 

The service was Thursday, May 16, 2013 on the Murfreesboro Civic Plaza which is located in front of Murfreesboro City Hall.

 

The ceremony was to remember and pay tribute to all law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, with a special emphasis on those officers who were killed in the line of duty while serving in Rutherford County. The ceremony included officers from all law enforcement agencies serving in Rutherford County including: Murfreesboro Police Department, Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, Smyrna Police Department, LaVergne Police Department, MTSU Public Safety, Tennessee Highway Patrol, U.S. Marshall Service, Veterans Administration Hospital Police Department, and Eagleville Police Department. 

 

Following the ceremony, the Fraternal Order of Police placed a wreath on the law enforcement memorial monument on the Public Square. 

 

Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week are observances in the United States that pay tribute to fallen officers. The day was created in 1962 when Congress asked President John F. Kennedy to honor the nation’s law enforcement officers. According to a 2002 proclamation by President George W. Bush, “Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week pay tribute to local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who serve and protect us with courage and dedication.” 

 

Officers honored in Rutherford County included: William H. James (1942), Herbert McClanahan (1946), Samuel Enoch Vaughn (1953), Lewis Hendon (1957), Joseph Tomlinson (1999), Kay Rogers (2005), Byron Motley (2006), Matt Lovejoy (2007), Andy Wall (2011).
