Some of the closest races in the GOP primary were in judicial races. Kevin Hodges edged Aaron Conklin for General Sessions Judge Part 1, by 203 votes.
Rutherford County Mayor Ernest Burgess and Sheriff Robert Arnold both defeated GOP challengers Tuesday in the county primary. Burgess defeated challenger Jimmy Evans by 2,302 votes while Arnold defeated challenger Bob Asbury by 2,849 votes.
Two sitting county commissioners lost in Tuesday's GOP primary. District 2 Commissioner Jack Black was defeated by Stephen Pearcy by 276 votes. In District 16, Phillip Dodd defeated incumbent Matthew Young by 109 votes.
Local bail bondsman Melissa Harrell defeated incumbent Circuit Court Clerk Laura Bohling for the Republican nomination. It was Harrell's first race for public office.
Jennings Jones defeated Chuck Ward in the Republican primary District Attorney General race. Jones received 62% of the vote to Ward's 37.7%, a difference of 3,090 votes.
Longtime Public Defender Gerald Melton held off a challenge from Andy Brunelle for the GOP nomination. Melton received 51.5% of the vote to Brunelle's 48.4%, a difference of 367 votes in the countywide election.
