Talk about a wild turn of events... A training exercise Monday for the La Vergne Police Department SWAT team turned into a live mission following a dangerous domestic assault call.

The family of the victim contacted the police about the 47-year old woman who had been assaulted and held against her will for over six hours. Her former boyfriend had entered her home shortly before 10:00 p.m. Sunday night and refused to leave, pulling out a handgun to hold her against her will. After he voluntarily left the home early Monday morning, the victim contacted her family.

The SWAT team had already assembled Monday morning for a planned training exercise in La Vergne that included local police and members of the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.  They were deployed to the residence located at 141 Greenfield Drive, where they apprehended the armed suspect. Multiple weapons were located inside the home.

Philip Mankin, Jr., age 49, was arrested.  He is charged with four felonies, including: Aggravated Domestic Assault, Aggravated Kidnapping, Felony Vandalism, and Possession of a Weapon in Commission of a Felony.

“A domestic assault call is one of the most dangerous calls that law enforcement responds to,” said Detective Bob Hayes. “The La Vergne Police Department is very serious about all crimes committed in our city, but we are especially vigilant when it comes to domestic assault calls. We encourage all victims of domestic situations to seek police intervention.”

The victim of the Sunday night crime sought medical attention, was treated and released. Because of the nature of the crime, her name is not being provided.
