Capt. Chris Fly of the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center graduated from the 29th National Jail Leadership Command Academy.

Jail administrators learn to develop leadership skills to use within jails during the week class.

"One of the most interesting things I learned was working with the various generations who make up the current work force," Fly said. "Not every generation can be managed the same. While managing the various generations, a leader must be able to adapt to various styles of leadership that will influence employees to accomplish the mission of the facility."

A leader must exercise situational leadership that assesses each individual strengths and weaknesses, he said. Then, the leader should place employees in the positions that will benefit the organization and will help work on their weaknesses.

Administrators learn budgeting, finance and statistical skills. They develop skills in communications, ethics, collaboration, discipline and management of change.
