If the police call you, it is not a good idea to ask them how much it would cost to “not turn in an accident report.”

According to LaVergne Public Information Officer Kathy Tyson, that is exactly what a man and a woman living in LaVergne are accused of doing. 69-Year old David Clay was said to have gotten into an accident on March 29th while driving down Waldron Road. He is accused of rear-ending someone. After the wreck, Clay supposedly gave the other party involved old information. When police tracked down Clay a day later they made a phone call to his house. That was when 49-year old Tammy Bessire answered the phone and allegedly asked the officer on the other end of the line how much it would cost to ensure that the accident report not be turned in. We were told that Clay then got on the phone and asked the same question.

Shortly after that conversation, Clay and Bessire were picked up by police and charged with bribery of public servant. Clay was also charged with failure to give notice of accident and leaving the scene of accident.

The two were arrested this past Saturday and released shortly after posting bond. They will appear in court next month.
